RICCA: A Bar That Blossoms

Designer Ryohei Kanda's Hanami-Inspired Creation

RICCA is not just a bar, but a celebration of Japanese aesthetic sense, a tribute to the country's traditional atmosphere and alleyways. The design is inspired by Hanami, a cultural event that takes place in early spring and lasts only a couple of weeks. This fleeting period, when cherry blossoms bloom and flutter, is captured in the design of RICCA, making it a unique and captivating space.

The bar is divided into two areas, each reflecting a different aspect of Hanami. The lounge area exudes glamour and beauty, while the private karaoke room embodies the energy and strength of the event. The ceilings of both spaces are adorned with deformed flower objects made of resin with hologram sheets, cut with a laser. These objects, reflecting various colors and lights, appear to be fluttering flowers, adding to the enchanting atmosphere of the bar.

The design process was not without its challenges. The reflections from the hologram materials, which were bent and pressed by hand, varied depending on the angle of the ceiling, light, and air circulation. Numerous samples and experiments were conducted to set the materials properly. Despite these challenges, the design was realized without the need for frequent maintenance or repair.

The bar covers a total area of 75.9m2, with the lounge area spanning 45.8m2 and the VIP room 9.7m2. The art panels measure 140mm x 130mm, and the hexagons are 30mm x 26mm. The design project was completed at B1F KAGURAZAKA TERRACE 5-1 KAGURAZAKA, SHINJUKU-KU, TOKYO ZIP162 0825 JAPAN.

Ryohei Kanda's RICCA was awarded the Golden A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2017. This prestigious award is granted to marvelous, outstanding, and trendsetting creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom.
